Jordan: Monday, September 6: Wadi Rum

We drove 1.5 hours to Wadi Rum where we had tea and talked with our Bedouin host. Then we climbed into the back of the 4wd truck and were driven off into the desert to see the usual sights which included Lawrence’s Spring, several slot canyons, a couple of rock bridges and some sand dunes. There were a lot of places where we could do short scrambles up to interesting places. The rock is mostly sandstone, so it has a rough surface and lots of handholds/footholds.  Our drivers were young kids who brought along a kitten which kept trying to get away.  They parked under a cliff and cooked lunch for us.  The kitten climbed into a cave, and they had to climb after it.  Then at one point the truck broke down because someone had added gas instead of diesel.  It was interesting how all of the other drivers all stopped to help out.  Their passengers looked somewhat disgruntled, but that didn't stop the drivers from helping out. At night we slept in the desert in tents.  Normally it would have been a lot more crowded, but because of covid we got the entire campsite to ourselves. For dinner, we had Zarb which is food cooked underground.
