18 June: Peru: Lima to Cusco to Ollantaytambo

June 18: We arrived in Lima around 1 AM and stayed at Mama Backpacker's Hostel. We were happy with this choice and recommend it.

It wasn't the greatest neighborhood--which was no big deal because we didn't do more than go outside to meet our Uber, but the taxi driver complained about taking us back there.  It was super clean with a lot of nice sitting areas, and everyone was very kind and welcoming. We stayed in the private rooms which had their own section--a shared bathroom, kitchen, and sitting room for a room with a double bed and our room with two single beds. And since no one was staying in the other room, we had the apartment all to ourselves.

In the morning we took an Uber to central Lima and walked around.

In the afternoon we flew LATAM airlines to Cusco, arriving early evening just as it was getting dark.

From the Airplane

We took an Uber ride to Hostel Iskay in Ollantaytambo (about 2 hours drive) There was a new road that had multiple areas were an avalanche had destroyed part of the road. Part of the road was dirt.
En route to Ollantaytambo

Ollantaytambo was a great place to stay. It is a small town built by the Incans which has been continuously inhabited since that time. Cars can drive around the perimeter, but the stone streets are far too narrow for vehicles. Small canals run along many of the streets. The town is built in a valley with ruins on each side of it.  We chose it because it was slightly lower elevation, and we were trying to prevent altitude sickness by going down to the Sacred Valley.
