Thursday, February 8, 2018: Cahal Pech

We had planned to go to Xunantunich Mayan ruins, but the river was so high that the hand-cranked ferry was not running. Instead we went to the Cahal Pech ruins, an ancient palatial area. We chose not to hire a tour guide and were really glad that we did that since the guides were discouraging people from climbing because the rain made everything slippery. One of the funnier comments from a guide was that it was okay for us to do the climbing because we were young, but the people in their tour, some of whom did not look older than me, were too old. There were 4 tall step pyramids around a central courtyard and lots of interesting doorways.

After we had finished climbing and exploring, we walked back to San Ignaceo and ate vegetable curry at Serendip, a Sri Lankan restaurant.  Then we came back to the Parrot Nest and hung out. We met a lot of interesting people from both the US and from Europe on our trip at the lodge.
