Thursday, April 12: Tivoli

April 12: Annemarie showed me around the house. It's a duplex with 3 apartments on each side (at least Elisabeth and Nikola have 3 apartments, and next door appears to be similar), one on each floor. They live in the middle apartment, and Nicola's office is on the bottom floor. It has great views of the surrounding hills and vineyards. The house itself has very high ceilings. It reminds me of the houses in Germany where each room can be closed including the kitchen and the living room. The room we stayed in had a bed, a sofa, a table, and a huge wardrobe. There is a balcony off our room, but on the third floor where Annemarie had stayed when she lived in Italy, there was a large patio which had a permanent ladder to access the flat roof.

After Annemarie showed me the house, we walked to the Bible School and looked around there.

In the afternoon, we went to Tivoli, a town older than Rome by a thousand years which was built into the hills. First we dropped Nicola off at the house they are planning to move to, then we drove to Tivoli, a city up in the hills northeast of Rome where Elisabeth took us to see some ancient ruins (Ponte Gregoriano.)

Then Annemarie and I walked around the city while Elisabeth visited the hospital.

We explored interesting streets and bought gelato (mine was dark chocolate and cherry chocolate) and ended up at the ancient castle tower, Rocca Pia, an imposing fortress with 4 towers commissioned by a pope; built in 1461, later used as a prison. I also bought a belt and a scarf at stalls nearby.

Then we met Elisabeth again and drove back down to the house which they are hoping to move to where Nicola led a Bible study. It was all in Italian, so I read along in my German bible.

After that we drove back to Finocchio. On the way back we stopped at a second hand store to look for a lamp and picked up pizza--this pizza had 4 varieties, one quadrant was cheese, the second mushroom, the third zucchini, and the 4th potatoes and sausage.
