Saturday, February 3, 2018: Spelunking

In the morning we talked to the other people who were staying here. They were from Belgium and getting ready for a 3 day jungle survival experience. We were happier with having a guide take us through the caves. Our host, Frances, dropped us off at St. Herman's cave where we met our guide. First we carried out inner tubes to the point where we would get into the water and then we continued into the cave. We did a lot of climbing up and down, holding onto rocks and sometimes when there were no rocks, ropes. We had head lamps which we turned off periodically to get a feel for how dark it was. We climbed up and down for a couple of hours until we reached the other end of the cave at which point we climbed back since we were also going tubing. Along the way we saw a lot of Mayan pottery pieces. The pottery was either broken or a kill hole was put in the bottom as part of the ceremonial offerings. It was strenuous but very fun! Although this was a smaller cave than some of the others, it was also much more private. We were the only people in the cave until close to the end of our tour, about 4 hours later.

After we finished clambering on the rocks, we paddled our inner tubes up almost to the point where the water bubbled up from underground.  Then we let the tubes follow the current all the way to the opening where we had come in. Part of the way we tubed in the dark with our headlamps off.  It was really fun!

After we finished the tour we went back for lunch and a rest then went to the chocolate shop and back to the Blue Hole for one last look. Amber, the two year old daughter of our hosts, played hide and seek with me after we got back.
