Tuesday, September 27: Part II: The Great Wall

After meeting Andrew outside the Beijing Zoo, we had a quick lunch at a nearby cafe.  A highlight was the aquarium of live fish where people picked out their lunch and then ate them with the head being a delicacy.  We discussed the fact that one difference between Chinese people and American people is that the Chinese like to see all of what they are eating while the Americans tend to want their meat disguised.

We drove about 2 hours in Andrew's Mondeo which he had only owned for about 3 months.  Private car ownership is a relatively new phenomenon in China.

The Great wall consists of thousands of famous stragic passes and steep mountains.  The Great Wall at Badaling, which guards the Juyong pass, is located 40 miles northwest of Beijing and is known for "its strategic position, marvelous scenery, long history and profound culture."

These two pictures were the type of thing we drove past on our way to Badaling

Trucks tended to be considerably smaller, but all were well laden.

At Badaling we took the cable car to the top and then walked down for about an hour.  Since we got there mid-afternoon, the crowds, most of whom had come on tour buses, were starting to thin.  By the time we left we had the wall almost entirely to ourselves.
